Our Story

The origin of Class and Church at Mt Carmel was organized as follows; Two brethren concluded to attend a meeting at Pleasant View Church of God, and being entertained with a very enthusiastic exposition of Godte divine Word (Truth) were so well the sermon that they became impressed with the idea that such preaching was needed at Mt Zion Chürch at Durbin, and acting on the impulse of the moment invited the Pastor-Rev S. Rothrock to come over and preach for them. The invitation being accepted-the first sermon was preached Sept 20,1893. During November and December a series of meetings were held and a number of persons became abxious to have a Class Sho nane of Tr tion Ciats of The Chure 02 Cod, They orued, Sary 000 the Mt Zion Union Church, (Durbin, Ohio) and in Dec.1894 a series of about 6 weeks revival was held. The membership was increased to 55 members. With this protracted effort came the desire for a new Church. On Dec, 26,1894 pursuant to notices to the citizens, Rev Rothrock was chosen chairman. Then they consulted on the propriety of building a new Church, They came to the conclusion to make the effort, and on Jan.17,1895 Committees were chosen. The Committee to secure the ground and deed was John White,Mark McDonald, mile north of Durbin, Ohio. Carpentry was done by. DoS, and F.C: Dock for $109.00. Cost of seats and pulpit was $202.00, stoves etc. $14.80, bell With the completion of the building it became necessary to name the Church The name Mt Carmel was chosen this became also the name chosen by the Class on Sept 13,1895. On Sept 15,1895 the church was dedicated, Ret. Wim Tates of Fijdlay College gave the sermon. The first elders of the Church were G.A. Hines and Christ Burk. Deacons were I.D. Kerr and Sam Huffman; Trustees were J.E. Toland, Johh Hines, Mrs. WH. Roettger, W.H. Roettger was secretary. W H Roettger was the first delegate to the Ohio Eldership at Ohio City in 1909. First Deaconesses in 1909 were Rachael McDonald and Mrs W H Roettger. Ministers serving in the old Church were Revis S. Rothrock, A.C.Osbourne, J.do Witham, J.F. Miller, JW/ Johnson, S.F: Bauders, AeO, Musgrave, Wei, Neff, Frank Snavely, W.E. Turner and ToW. Iyons. In 1919 the original church building burned. Only the pulpit and piana and a few pieces were saved, some of which are in use in the basement of the present Church, Rev. E H Chaney was pastor when the Church burned It was decided to proceed to build on the grounds where the original Church stood, During the time following the fire worship and Sun. School were held in the School house on the opposite corner of the'intersecting roads. Then a tabernacle was built of wood withsawdust floor; A good revival was held in the tabernacle-also Church and Sunday School, As the new building was constructed servieas were held in the new basement. The corner stone was laid in 1921.

 

-2- History of Mt Carmel Church of Goll, continued- Due to the delay in construction the Church auditorium was not accepted until March 1923. Dedication services were held later in the year. Rev W H Guyer, president of Findlay College gave the dedication sermon. The Church was of brick construction and cost $26,000. Money for this was raised through personal contributions,meals served at Mercer County Fair, and at Burbin Bean Bake. W F Nefi, Ministers serving in the new Chyrch were - E H Chaney,/Fred Rayle, Gaylord James Mckenzie, Harry Cole, 1, , Badere) 0 Swarter, Brcal Mator, DonaL, Hair Janes Wa11.000, Russell Snyder, Morris Now and at present time Paul Tewell.
